Category N ("non-structural") means an insurer previously wrote the car off, but the damage did not affect the frame, chassis, or structural safety of the vehicle — think cosmetic damage, electrical faults, or damage to parts like bumpers, doors, or trim that don't affect structural integrity.
Insurers write a car off when the cost of repair is close to or exceeds the car's value — not necessarily because the damage itself is severe. A car with a smashed windscreen, flooded interior, or damaged electronics can be economically written off as Cat N even though none of that affects the frame.
Cat S ("structural") means the damage did affect the frame or chassis — generally considered more serious. See our Cat S guide for details.
